Now, over a decade on, our material has become known not only as a Kaizen foam alternative, but as the go-to tool control product of choice for discerning users far and wide.
Here’s just a few reasons why...
Shadow Foam has been on the market for around 12 years now, the appetite for it has always been great, and is growing all the time. Previously people had seen Kaizen foam, as it was becoming known, as a great way of getting their tools organised. The initial problem was, people outside of the USA couldn’t really get their hands on it easily, certainly not
without great expense.
While we knew and liked the product, it was clear there could be some easy enhancements too. So as our brand was born to bring a cost-effective DIY tool control product to anyone on
this side of the pond, it made sense to refine and polish the concept too.
Now, over a decade on, our material has become known not only as a Kaizen foam alternative, but as the go-to tool control product of choice for discerning users far and wide.
Here’s just a few reasons why...
The research and development for the material behind the Shadow Foam brand was a much more detailed process than you might think. This, not least, is because we wanted to take all the elements of what was already a reasonable tool control solution and enhance it so we could offer people the ultimate Kaizen foam alternative.
Developing an honest, straightforward product that was optimised for ease of use, whilst keeping a low price point was key. Doing so without scrimping on quality was important to us, so ensuring the material would hold up over time was integral to the process. The proof really is in the pudding as in some of our internal applications, we’re still using the same foam inserts that we made when the product first came out.
We knew that some people reported issues with the failure or weakness in the bonding of the layers in the Kaizen foam they’d tried, so ensuring our layers were firmly bonded was an important feature. This prevents the material falling apart easily when being customised, or over time and use. We don’t, though, use any glues or bonding material in the foam which would make it more difficult to manage from a quality perspective and render it impossible to recycle. Instead we heat laminate the layers of foam together to offer the most robust, additive free layers.
Bringing a superior DIY tool control product to market was just the first step. To counter the kinds of issues people had experienced using Kaizen type foams in the past, it needed to be easy to use.
Like anything, there are best methods and techniques which will help you get the job done more easily, safely and accurately. Therefore, ensuring we produce not just the best tools for the job but also simple guides, methods and inspiration in both written and video format to help anyone creating their own tool control project, is something we did right from the outset. To date almost 150,000 subscribers on our YouTube channel are testament to people’s desire to get inspired when it comes to their tool storage projects.
Our range of accessories has been honed over the years to offer people the correct tools to keep safe and get incredible results with their projects and this approach has been unrivalled by other foam brands more focussed on simply selling more of the base product. We actively care about all our users getting the great results we know can be achieved with our award-winning material, so every bit as much effort has gone into curating that range of accessories.

View full detailsFor many, a quick and easy fix to their tool control issues is all that’s needed. A great visual method of seeing if a tool isn’t replaced or of protecting your valuable tools on the move. At it’s core, that’s what the material does for you. But for those seeking something a little more bespoke or refined, then we needed a Kaizen foam alternative that would really level up your storage.
To do that, we looked more closely at the aesthetic of the Kaizen foam products out there. Often with rippled and inconsistent surface texture, uneven bubble structure within the foam and unsightly results. Functional, absolutely, but pleasing to the eye? Not so much. Between the development of the foam itself and ensuring everyone has the right tools and guidance for the job at hand, we’ve made sure that even the most discerning eye will be hard pressed to tell the difference between your self-made tool storage and those more expensive machine cut options.
Additionally, we realised that colour doesn’t just play a part in the tool-control element of the inserts, making it immediately obvious when a tool isn’t replaced. But also it can also share your individuality, make you stand out from the crowd or simply compliment your brand, your tool brand or your tool box in really visually powerful ways. Today, with ten striking and vibrant colours of foam in our repertoire, that’s way more than anyone else is able to offer. Meaning there’s something to suit most everyone. It also turns out to be one of the key things people have been looking for from Kaizen foam alternatives – choice.
We are proud of what our Shadow Foam product has become, and it’s now a compelling choice for thousands around the world who want to achieve tool box perfection without breaking the bank. It’s proof too that budget or DIY tool-control methods do not mean you’ve compromised on the results. With Shadow Foam as the ultimate Kaizen foam alternative, you really can achieve cost-effective, visually stunning and long-lasting tool box inserts for many years to come.
