Aviation Toolbox

What is the best way to organise an aviation toolbox?

Shadow Foam was approached by Heli Air, and was asked to fix their tool and FOD control problem and organize their current helicopter tool storage.

In as little as 10 days, we were able to organize all their toolboxes, and the team was thrilled with the results.

We spoke to them afterward to see what they had to say about their experience of working with the team here at Shadow Foam.

What Heli Air had to say:

“Why did you need Shadow Foam?”

“We’ve been faced with the issue of tool control and management for quite a long while now, we’ve been pressurized over a long enough time to come up with a proper long-term solution for tool control.”

“How did you find the service of our team?”

“The moment you picked up the phone, you were positive, and I got immediately a very very warm feeling that you would deliver me what you promised. I just had this feeling immediately.”

“What stopped you choosing machine cut liners?”

“We’ve looked at all sorts of various options. The cost was extremely high, logistics are difficult, losing the toolbox for six to eight weeks at a time.

At the time, that was going to be very difficult for us to commit to.”

“Were there any other advantages of Shadow Foam?”

“The other thing that was contagious with your system, is that you can utilize a lot of the volume.

Other companies lay them flat and that was the biggest issue with other technicians.

They were saying that they couldn’t fit all our tools in our toolboxes, and we would have to buy bigger ones. That isn’t an issue with Shadow Foam.”

“Do you have any other comments?”

“If you need to organize your helicopter toolboxes, you have to use Shadow Foam. It’s amazing. I’m very very happy, it’s like having Christmas twice over!”

Heli Air was able to line all 11 of their helicopter toolboxes with Shadow Foam, and as expected.

Auditors were utterly blown away by how great they looked, and even took pictures of them all to use as examples in the future!

What is Shadow Foam?

It can be cut and shaped to fit whatever tools or items that you wish and can provide a sturdy and protective location for all items once complete.

There will be no worry about tools falling out of place whilst traveling around.

This will in turn prevent any damage to tools, along with protecting the interior of your roll cab or toolbox. This time, Shadow foam organised a fantastic array of aviation toolbox, these were organised with our foam inserts.

Helicopters and Tool Control

Like the aviation industry, individuals working in helicopter maintenance are also required to follow and adhere to the same regulations.

With regards to how tools are to be stored during routine maintenance work.

These rules must be followed so that all tools can be found once the maintenance is complete, and to quickly identify when an item is missing or has potentially been left inside the helicopter.

Helicopter Tool Control

Helicopter tool control regulations are outlined by the CAA, and we have provided in-depth detail about the relevant regulations in our recent blog;

“Most UK airlines have a Tool Control and Accountability policy in place, as outlined by The Civil Aviation Authority.

Under policy 145-2 Equipment, Tools and Materials – OTAR Part 145.109 and in the U.S under The Federal Aviation Administrator. AC No: 150/5380-5B

Helicopter FOD & Safety

As Heli Air knows all too well, tool and FOD control are important aspects of helicopter maintenance.

Any items that are mistakenly left inside a helicopter or in the surrounding area, can lead to damage to the aircraft and in worse cases, personnel.

Helicopter Maintenance

If you work in helicopter maintenance, then you will understand how time-consuming and stressful it can be.

To ensure that you have all the necessary tools that you require for that job, along with other tools that you will potentially need throughout the day.

Since working with Heli Air, it has highlighted to us the need for effective tool control in this industry.

It has provided another key use for Shadow Foam that is not only practical but could potentially save lives.

Tools can be given their custom cut place to be stored, which will limit the time it will take to find specific items, and more importantly, identify when one has been misplaced.

The Importance of Helicopter Safety

In recent times, the reputation of helicopter safety has depleted, with accidents increasing in the last few years.

They are slowly becoming one of the less favourable ways to travel.

This in turn is why regular and correct maintenance is so important.

Safety procedures such as policy 145-2 must be followed strictly to the letter.

These guidelines are also important as helicopters are routinely used in some of the most high-risk jobs in the world; such as search and rescue missions.

In war zones and sometimes during dangerous weather conditions.

Risk of Danger

The risk of danger must be completely and ruled out before take-off.

Hence why regular maintenance and thorough tool control must be addressed.

And particularly, why products such as Shadow Foam are a useful, and beneficial addition to any helicopter tool roll cab.
